A Devastating Transformation a Single Year Has Made in the US

One year ago, the environment was utterly separate. Before the American presidential vote, reflective citizens could recognize America's significant faults – its unfairness and imbalance – however they continued to see it as the US. A democracy. A country where legal governance meant something. A state guided by a honorable and upright public servant, despite his older age and declining health.

These days, this autumn, countless Americans hardly identify the land we inhabit. Persons believed to be undocumented migrants are rounded up and shoved into vans, sometimes denied due process. The eastern section of the White House – is being destroyed for an obscene event space. The president is harassing his opponents or alleged foes and demanding federal prosecutors surrender an enormous amount of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are deployed across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The military command, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has practically rid itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses possibly reaching nearly $1tn of taxpayer money. Colleges, law firms, journalism organizations are submitting under the president’s threats, and billionaires are handled as aristocracy.

“America, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the edge toward dictatorship and extremism,” an American historian, stated recently. “Finally, swifter than I believed likely, it transpired here.”

Every morning starts to new horrors. And it's challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – how severely declined our nation is, and the speed at which it has happened.

Nevertheless, we understand that the president was duly elected. Despite his highly troubling initial presidency and even after the alerts linked to the understanding of Project 2025 – following the leader directly stated openly he would act as an autocrat only on the first day – enough Americans elected him rather than Kamala Harris.

As terrifying as the present situation are, it's more daunting to realize that we’re only three-quarters of a year into this administration. What will an additional three years of this downfall position us? And suppose that period transforms into a more extended duration, since there is nobody to restrain this ruler from opting that a third term is necessary, perhaps for security concerns?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. We will have midterm elections in 2026 that could establish an alternate balance of power, should Democrats recapture one or both houses of Congress. We have public servants who are striving to apply some accountability, such as Democratic congressmen that are launching an investigation into the attempted money grab from the justice department.

And a national vote in the next cycle could initiate our journey to healing precisely as the prior selection put us on this regrettable path.

There are countless citizens demonstrating in the streets across municipalities, similar to recent in the past days during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is rising”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or throughout anti-war demonstrations or during the Watergate scandal.

On those occasions, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

Reich says he knows the signs of that awakening and notices it unfolding now. For proof, he references the recent massive protests, the widespread, multi-faction opposition regarding a personality's dismissal and the near-unanimous defiance by media to sign military mandates they solely cover authorized information.

“The dormant force perpetually exists asleep before some venality grows too toxic, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, specific cruelty so noisy, that it has no choice but to awaken.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the big questions persist: is the US able to return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its standing internationally and its commitment to the rule of law?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My pessimistic brain indicates that the latter is accurate; that everything might be lost. My hopeful heart, however, advises me that we must try, by any means we can.

Personally, as a media critic, that’s about urging journalists to adhere, more thoroughly, to their duty of scrutinizing authority. For others, it might involve participating in congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to defend electoral access.

Not even one year prior, we existed in a separate situation. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to strive to persevere.
